Retrieve and store donated eyes for corneal transplantation and research.
Diseases of the cornea can cause loss of its transparency and thus can lead to blindness. Diseased corneas can now be replaced successfully by transplanting a human donor cornea to the diseased eye. Corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) is one of the most successful organ transplant surgeries.
Corneas for transplant come from the individuals who have donated their eyes after death.
Nagri Eye Bank is a member of EYE BANK ASSOCIATION OF INDIA and it is registered under HUMAN ORGAN TRANSPLANTAITON ACT in the year 2006.
Every year we collect approximately 400 eye balls. After careful serological and specular evaluation, the corneas are preserved in chemical media under cold storage system. These corneas are used as early as possible for keratoplasty. Various types of (fullthickness or lamellar) keratoplasties are performed according to the requirement of the patients. Non viable corneas are used for research and teaching purpose.
